Nuclear Iran

ISIS has a new report  stating that Iran is expected to achieve “critical capability” in mid-2014. This is defined as ” technical capability to produce sufficient weapon-grade uranium from its safeguarded stocks of low enriched uranium for a nuclear explosive, without being detected”

David Albright has his detractors but ISIS  is an excellent source for information on Iran’s nuclear program.

One can hope that this report may prompt a renewed interest in negotiations with Iran about their nuclear program.  some of Iran’s recent actions may be signaling a willingness to pursue dialogue. US attempts to reciprocate signaling may  help to lay the groundwork for talks.

Perhaps the most important aspect that ISIS’ report illustrates is the need to conduct talks sooner rather than later. If Iran achieves critical capability  to create a nuclear device despite safeguards – negotiations will be infinitely harder.
