Nagasaki

Matt Harries brought this to my attention- thanks!

Google has exhibits on the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings. The collections are incredible and worth a few minutes.

It has been my limited experience that discussions about the morality of these bombings are rarely productive. There is an important conversation to be had about the use of “strategic” bombing, the role of civilians in “total war”, and how the introduction of nuclear weapons interacts with these. In my experience people have rarely been prepared to discuss all of this as part of the conversation alongside the tragic effects that these attacks had on  real people. I’ve mostly run into a binary of entrenched ideological camps- it might as well be american politics.
I think I would benefit from covering this topic with some of the Sp403 scholars.
